In 1974, the Palamu Tiger Reserve was established. It is located in the Jharkhand state district of Latehar, surrounded in the north by the river Auranga, Netarhat forest in the south, Latehar forest in the east and Chhattisgarh in the west. This tiger reserve was one of the nine tiger reserves launched at that time and is unique in itself as the world’s first sanctuary where tiger census was conducted around 1932. The total tiger reserve area is 1130 square kilometres.
